On 16 April, the Shift Project organised a debate on the Green Deal with the heads of the French lists for the European elections. The discussion on the financing of climate and environmental policies provided an opportunity to take stock of the most widely shared ideas (restoration of a wealth tax, etc.) and the most divisive ones (money creation, joint borrowing, etc.).

In presenting her political priorities for the next five years on 18 July, the German Conservative outlined the contours of an ecological transition designed to appeal to as many political groups as possible. A recipe that should enable her to navigate the troubled waters of a highly fragmented European Parliament. At the risk of certain concessions being difficult to reconcile with the initial ambition.

The Green Deal is no longer content to occupy centre stage in European politics. The EU is increasingly seeking to impose its green standards on imports, and therefore indirectly on its trading partners. It's a trend that not only irritates its trading partners, but also divides it internally, to the point of destabilising the Commission's powerful Directorate-General for Trade.
