The coalition government headed by Xavier Bettel took a beating in a triple referendum on 6 June, a month before taking up the EU Council Presidency. Who’s who

In Luxembourg's government, two key ministers will be leading the Council Presidency. Jean Asselborn, minister for foreign and European affairs, will handle the political questions. In office since 2004, he is the most senior member of the Foreign Affairs Council. Relations with the European Parliament (and thus three-way talks) will be in the hands of Labour and Employment Minister Nicolas Schmit, who also served as Luxembourg's permanent representative to the EU from 1998 to 2004.
