Both US legislative chambers now have bipartisan bills, but it is unclear if they will advance

On 17 June, Senators Chris Murphy (Democrat, Connecticut) and Orrin Hatch (Republican, Utah) introduced draft legislation aimed at granting EU citizens the right to file a civil lawsuit in US courts if a US government agency misuses their personal data. The Judicial Redress Act entrusts the US attorney-general with the job of designating countries and federal agencies to which the law applies. New EP resolution

The European Parliament is due to adopt a resolution on mass surveillance in the October plenary. The current draft text in the Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) “welcomes the efforts of the US administration to rebuild trust with the introduction of the Judicial Redress Act” and urges Congress to pass the bill.
