On 10-11 June, the European Union is to host what an EU official described on 5 June as "four summits for the price of one": apart from the main bi-regional EU-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) summit, there will be the EU-SICA (Central American Integration System) and EU-CARIFORUM (Caribbean Forum) high-level meetings in the afternoon of 11 June, as well as a brief EU-Mexico bilateral summit the following morning.

Background

The EU-CELAC is the second so named summit, since the EU took into account progress in regional cooperation by agreeing to rename these meetings in the declaration adopted at the last summit in Santiago de Chile in January 2013. The region is already an enormously important investment partner for the EU, accounting for just under 40% or 0.5 trillion euro worth of EU investment - "more than all EU investment in Russia, China and India put together," as the EU official stressed.
